Mesothelioma - What Are the Treatment Options?

Mesothelioma is a disease of the lungs caused by asbestos. Its symptoms are very grave and often makes patients very uncomfortable. It is very important and helpful to the patient to discover the disease on time otherwise the prognosis will be poor and the patient dies. For some reasons, women stand a better chance of surviving the disease than disease. This perhaps is due to some underling genetic factor. Over the years, scientists and researchers have come up with various methods of treating Mesothelioma. Of all the various methods the three most common treatment options include: the use of surgical intervention, the use of radiation techniques and chemotherapy intervention. The normal practise is to combine this treatment strategies so as to get good response. Let us now take an indept look at this modes of treatment one after the other.

Surgery in mesothelioma can be done by wide local excision or pleurodesis. wide local excision is a kind of procedure used to remove a small area of diseased tissue with some areas of normal, undiseased tissue. This type of surgery is normally performed on the breast and to skin lesions. Pleurodesis on the other hand, is a surgical procedure in which the pleural space is artificially obliterated. This is done to prevent the reoccurence of pnemothorax or pleural effusion caused by mesothelioma. Pleurodesis can also be done by the use of chemicals without surgical intervention. We now proceed to discuss chemotherapy as a treatment option in mesothelioma..

Chemotherapy is the simply the use of chemicals namely drugs to kill cancer cells. Drugs may be administered orally through other routes of administrtion such as directly into the spinal column. The drug of choice in treating mesothelioma is permetrexed( trade name: Alimta). It is administered in a 21 day cycle. Permetrexed is however not alone but combined with a platinum based compound called cisplatin for synergism. Patients on Alimta will be expected to also take folic acid and vitamin B12 to lower the side effects. Other chemodrugs include: vinorelbine, onconase, gemcitabine, e.t.c. Common side-effects of chemodrugs are: nausea and vomitting, constipation, fever, decreased white blood cell count which makes the patient prone to infections, and depression.

Radiation in mesothelioma may be internal or external. Internal radiation is also known as brachythereapy. Here, the internal radiation source is implanted within the patient. The external radiation involves an external beam radiation. Radiation is particularly useful against cancers that divide rapidly such as mesothelioma.

Small Cell Carcinoma Detection And Treatment

Like all forms of cancer, small cell carcinoma, is, usually fatal. Its manifestation as lung cancer has more incidence among men, especially those who smoke or are exposed to inert dust sized particles like those of asbestos. Limited and extensive are the two categories by which one understands the extent to which the disease is present. In the former case, the problem is limited only to the lungs and the bronchial tract while in the latter case, the cells would have spread outside the chest.

This disease is just like the other kinds of lung cancer as far as the symptoms manifest themselves. There is the usual problem with breathing, wheezing and coughing may be manifest in severe cases. The patient will often be found to be underweight. There may be excess sputum production. Early detection and starting the treatment early will help the patient's chances of survival.

It is universally accepted that smokers are the ones who are most likely to develop lung cancer. One may use a PET scan or MRI to aid the diagnosis and sometimes the biopsy would prove the results positive or otherwise. There are two ways to go about treating the disease. One is through the use of drugs. The other is by chemotherapy. While the former is found to be effective, there is always the possibility that the illness will return, because it is so resilient.

This illness is so tough that it quickly spreads to the other organs like the liver and the kidneys and then on to the brain. Surgical ways are never recommended and the chances of the patient surviving are very slim. It can originate from any part of the body. It mostly occurs in the lungs and most lung cancers have their beginning in the bronchi. There are known cases where the disease had originated from the wind pipe and alveoli. It is believed that the lung cancers begin as manifestations which are pre-cancerous and since these occur at the cellular level cannot be seen on examination by MRI or X-rays.

As time passes these develop into full-blown cancer which develop their own network to nourish the new cancer tissues. These then are seen as tumors. But by the time these tumors are detected, the affected tissues would have had enough time to move on to fresher pastures and once they metastasize then there is no stopping them.

The symptoms for this disease are:
Shortness of breathCoughing, including coughing up bloodWheezingLoss of appetiteLoss of weightUnusual tirednessSwelling the neck or face

Early detection could help in the treatment, though the doctors will not give you more than a fair share of survival. Though such cases are very rare, it would be the best to consult a doctor and clarify your doubts, if you find some of these symptoms showing up in your body.

There have been cases known where the treatment for cancer was started early and the patient survived.

Mesothelioma Cancer and Mesothelioma Lawyers

Special help is available to victims of Asbestos in industrial units and plants where exposure to this particular element is very high. Cancer of the lungs is caused by deadly fiber which is in the air at the workplaces. It is an incurable deadly disease. Pleural mesothelioma is found in the lung lining. Cancer found in the abdomen is known as peritoneal mesothelioma, and that of the heart is pericardial mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Cancer and Mesothelioma Lawyers are in news today. Asbestos is being widely used all over the world by people in some form or another. Chemical Plants, Mechanical Plants, Pulp and Paper Industry, Refineries, Industrial Plants, Factories, Construction Material Companies, Shipbuilding industry, Railroads, Power Plants, Textile Industry and other Manufacturing Plants are all using this deadly substance.

Earlier the material was appreciated for its erosion, heat and fire resistant qualities. Occupational hazard was there for all who worked with it; but the workers were given no guidance about how to protect themselves from it. People working near boilers, hot water pipes refrigerated storages and vats etc. never came to know about the dangerous circumstances under which they worked until it was too late.

Victims of Mesothelioma Cancer have Mesothelioma Lawyers fighting for their well being. Mesothelioma law firms are providing best services to sufferers and their families. Asbestos - Virtually Invisible, Yet Absolutely Lethal

Preventing Asbestos Exposure to Eliminate Deadly Diseases.

Mes•o•the•li•o•ma - can't pronounce it - can't cure it. I want to share a bit about the personal side of my journey - not for sympathy, but so you can better understand the facts about mesothelioma. In 2003, after enduring nine months of symptoms and multiple visits to doctors, my husband, Alan, was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Alan underwent an Extra-Pleural Pneumonectomy (EPP) -- a surgical procedure that removed a rib, left lung, and pericardium and replaced his diaphragm -- in hopes of having more time with his family. But, because of his asbestos exposure, our then-10-year-old daughter had to watch her father slowly die from a preventable disease. Sadly, our experience is a common one, and the fear, despair, and isolation were paralyzing.

The truth behind asbestos

After Alan's diagnosis, we learned that asbestos causes deadly diseases, and not just mesothelioma. We learned the silent truth: that, when inhaled, these sharp, invisible, odorless, tasteless asbestos fibers can cause permanent damage. Even more shocking is the fact that this has been well known and documented for more than 100 years. Fueled by grief, anger, and bewilderment, I knew I needed to turn my anger into action, which is why I co-founded the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) with Doug Larkin. Technological advances have enabled us to build international alliances over 20,000 strong and continue our educational, advocacy, and community support initiatives, including hosting our annual Asbestos Awareness Conferences, testifying at Congressional hearings, and keynote speaking at numerous engagements.

History is a great teacher to those who listen

More than 30 years ago, the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared asbestos to be a human carcinogen. The World Health Organization, International Labor Organization, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Surgeon General all agree: asbestos is a human carcinogen and there is no safe level of environmental or occupational asbestos exposure. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma and lung, gastrointestinal, laryngeal, and ovarian cancers, as well as non-malignant lung and pleural disorders.

Deadly hugs, Deadly chores.

Workers' exposure doesn't stop at the site; one can follow the trail of toxic dust home. It is no longer just workers who are at risk; it's also their families, children who hug parents wearing contaminated clothing home from work, and spouses who wash those clothes. The asbestos victims' profile has changed, once a blue-collar worker in his mid-sixties, there is a new patient profile emerging. Tragically, it is becoming more and more common to find women in their 50s being diagnosed with mesothelioma. The new patient profile presents frightening evidence that environmental exposure is lethal.

Construction workers were found to be 11 times more likely to develop mesothelioma.

The World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 workers around the world will die each year of an asbestos-related disease, equaling 300 deaths per day. An estimated 1.3 million employees in the construction and general industry face significant asbestos exposure on the job." In May 2010, the President's Cancer Panel (PCP) in America released the landmark 200-page report titled "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now." Environmental and occupational cancers are on agency radars now more than ever before. More than 90 percent of the asbestos used worldwide today is used in the manufacturing of asbestos-cement sheets and pipes.

Prevention is the only cure.

There are only two ways to stop mesothelioma - prevent asbestos exposure, and find a cure; the first step is to prevent environmental and occupational exposure. Through our voices, we can turn our anger into action. Educate yourself - prevent exposure by learning which materials might contain asbestos, and avoid disturbing them. If in doubt, hire a licensed and experienced asbestos inspector to sample the materials in your home to determine if there is asbestos present. If you were exposed or have experienced the early warning symptoms of an asbestos-related disease, talk to your physician and seek treatment from experienced doctors.

Every life lost to a preventable asbestos-caused disease is tragic; hundreds of thousands of lives lost is unconscionable.

Linda Reinstein became an activist when her husband, Alan, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2003. In 2004, she co-founded the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) to reach out to those who have been affected by asbestos-related disease.

Reinstein has been a strong political voice for justice in every major asbestos-related issue. Reinstein, a highly sought-after international speaker, has frequently served as a Congressional witness and presented at Department of Labor (OSHA), British House of Commons, United Nations Congress, American Public Health Association, and audiences around the world.

Recognized as an expert with more than 35 years of nonprofit experience in building and sustaining grassroots organizations, Reinstein specializes in developing, implementing and leveraging integrated social media campaigns. Focused on national and international occupational and environmental disease prevention, Reinstein's proficiency in the powerful advocacy space of online media has greatly increased the effectiveness of ADAO's core mission of education, advocacy, and community support actions.

Mesothelioma an Aggressive Cancer

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer type with no cure yet. The leading cause of this disease is exposure to asbestos, which is a naturally occurring silicate. No amount of asbestos exposure is safe although this disease develops after chronic exposure. Between the exposure itself and the mesothelioma cancer detection usually there is a 20 to 40 (even 50 years) years elapse. In the development of the mesothelioma cancer the long exposure time is of decisive importance, just as the type of asbestos and the fiber size. Asbestos today is banned from construction and all of the other industries, which a few decades ago frequently used it.

Mesothelioma is often mistaken to lung cancer because it mostly affects the pleura (thoracic cavity) among other thin membranes, which cover the organs in our body.

Other membranes where mesothelioma develops are: the peritoneum (in the abdominal cavity) the pericardium (fibroserous sac which encloses the heart), and the tunica vaginalis (serous membrane, which covers the front and sides of the testis and epididymis).

The general mesothelioma symptoms are: cough, husky voice, shortness of breath or difficulty to breathe, difficulty while swallowing, chest pain or abdominal swelling and pain, fatigue, anemia, the loss of appetite, weight loss, cachexia, fluid in the chest or abdomen, inability to sleep.

It is very difficult to diagnose mesothelioma and to connect the symptoms with the cancer because many of the symptoms can easily be mistaken for other more common, not life threatening diseases like heart disease, flu, pneumonia or bronchitis.

As mentioned above there are three main types of mesothelioma cancers: malignant pleural mesothelioma, malignant pericardial mesothelioma and malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Other occurring mesothelioma types (not very common): testicular, epithelial, biphasic, cystic, liver, brain, papillary, adenocarcinoma, sarcomatoid and desmoplastic mesothelioma.

There are three main options for treating mesothelioma cancer: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. These three treatment options are often combined for an effective treatment. During surgery, the cancer cells are removed and post-surgery mesothelioma doctors usually use radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Treating mesothelioma cancer with these methods will give the patients a possible extension of five years to their lives. Additional treatments used by mesothelioma doctors are anti-angiogenesis drugs, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and intraoperative photodynamic therapy.

In order to treat efficiently a mesothelioma cancer patient a unified and effective cooperation of general practitioners, epidemiologists, pathologists, thoracic surgeons, radiation therapists, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists and psychotherapists is required.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma - Treatment Options to Consider

By the time it is diagnosed, it will have spread to other organs making it very deadly. However there are several methods of treatment that have been developed for Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment which helps to make the patients comfortable and also lengthen their lives.

The first commonly used method for Peritoneal Mesothelioma cancer treatment is through surgery. This involves removal cancer tumors and the surrounding infected tissues. This will help to eradicate the cancer, suppress its growth or just relieve the symptoms. Surgery is always done with combination of other treatment methods e.g. radiation and chemotherapy. It is however important to note that surgery comes with other related risks like death, infection to other organs among others. The success of surgery depends on several factors among them age of the patient, level of spread of the cancer among other factors.

Chemotherapy is another treatment option for periodontal mesothelioma. It involves use of different chemotherapy drugs which are administered either as pills or injections. Chemotherapy helps to stop the growth and spread of tumors and also to relieve cancer symptoms. Chemotherapy has several side effects for example nausea, vomiting, loss of weight and loss of hair. However these side effects clear very fast after finishing the medication.

Another method used to treat peritoneal mesothelioma is radiation. A beam of high energy for example X-ray is directed to the infected cells. The radiation kills cancerous cell or helps to suppress their growth and also reducing the symptoms of the cancer. Several factors are considered before choosing radiation as the treatment option for example organs close to the tumor may dictate whether to use radiation or not. Radiation is rarely used alone but rather it's used in combination with other treatment options e.g. chemotherapy and surgery. Radiation may cause the patient to feel nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue.

Another treatment option for peritoneal mesothelioma is paracentesis. This procedure is carried out to aid in reliving cancer symptoms and not for treatment or cure purposes. Thin needles are inserted into the tumors and they are used to suck cancer fluids. This helps to reduce pain for several days before other treatment methods can be carried out.

There is also another common option in modern times called immunotherapy treatment. This procedure is commonly used together with chemotherapy. It involves introducing new agents into the blood stream that helps to boost the immune system making it able to fight the growth and spread of cancer cancerous tumors. It has fewer side effects and therefore it's more desirable than the older option for example radiation that might hurt other organs.

The author has written many articles relating to peritoneal mesothelioma treatment and the effects on the body due to exposure to asbestos. It is very important that individuals understand different options available to them once they have been diagnosed with this horrible disease.

Prognosis for Small Cell Lung Cancer: Face It Fighting

Prognosis for small cell lung cancer is no good news. Having it means you have aggressive malignant (cancer) cells in the tissues of your lung. Unless stopped, these cancerous cells will spread and destroy your healthy cells. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death affecting hundreds of thousands of men and women. Only 5% of those found afflicted managed to survive within a five year study period. The 95% did not make it despite radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. The other type of lung cancer is the non-small cell. This one is categorized into 3 sub-types, the squamous or epidermoid carcinoma, the adnocarcinoma and the large cell carcinoma or anaplastic. All three have low survival rates.

How far the small cell cancer has spread is determined by means of staging. Your treatment will be planned and implemented based on the stage of the disease. One way of finding out is by the clinical staging system which is based on the results of imaging tests such as the CT scan, MRI, chest x-ray, PET scan, biopsies and physical exam. If you underwent surgery, your doctor can discern based on a pathologic stage. You may have already heard or are aware of stage 1,2,3,4 in describing cancer. This is the TNM staging system which uses roman numerals 0 to IV (4) to describe the growth and spread of lung cancer. Under this system, the higher the number, the more serious is the spread of the cancer.

With the small lung cancer or oat cell, it can either be limited or extensive. Since diagnosis of this disease is usually detected when the cancer has already spread, majority of people have the extensive type. What it means is that the cancerous cells have invaded other parts of the body to include even the brain. Survival outlook or prognosis for small cell lung cancer is bad news for most of the cancer victims. According to the NCI's statistics, survival rate is very low for all stages of people with small cell lung cancer.

There are many stories of people who lost hope, went into depression and self blame after being diagnosed of lung cancer. They blamed their condition to smoking addiction. Aside from tobacco smoking, medical findings conclude other causes such as pollution, exposure to dangerous chemicals like asbestos, uranium, radon, etc. Your lungs are responsible for bringing oxygen into the body as you inhale and take out carbon dioxide as you exhale. When your lungs get affected with lung cancer, you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.

How do you cope up with life as a cancer fighting survivor? There are many ways that you can fight it out if this will be your posture. Your belief, self-confidence, determination to wage a battle against your adversary and strong faith in whatever is the Creator's will is very important. So, first thing you need to do is know the weakness and strength of your enemy. You need to educate yourself about the intricacies of lung cancer, latest hi tech laser or cell treatments and alternative remedies. Try to research as many success stories you can find from all sources in the web through Google search, internet sites of cancer research organizations like American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute.

You have to change your lifestyle. Get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, eat plenty of fruits, nuts and vegetables, and take lots of vitamins and natural nutritional supplements like maqui berry, pomegranates and green barley. Drink plenty of purified water every day, engage in regular moderate simple exercises, yoga and meditation. For your spiritual well being, commune and pray daily to your God.

Do this passionately with the support of your doctors, friends, relatives and loved ones. Despite the negative prognosis for small cell lung cancer, the lifestyle change can improve the quality of your life, and possibly even the victor. Join social networking cancer survivor clubs. There are more than 400,000 lung cancer survivors in the United States. Participate in forums and read blogs. In short, take an active stand and face your battle standing up with your own army of fighters and supporters from all over the world hoping, urging, encouraging, inspiring, motivating, pushing and praying for you to fight it out all the way win or lose! Believe that you will win!

Why Is Asbestos Dangerous?

This is a question that still plagues the minds of thousands of people. Some people automatically assume that since asbestos is a mineral that was used in building materials for so many years that it must really be safe. They assume that they media is simply playing up the stories a little too much or that doctors are just simply trying to get more money out of people. The fact of the matter is though that asbestos is extremely dangerous and it is something that could destroy your life, even if exposed for just a little bit. The worst thing is, many people assume that since they have not had any bad experiences to their self induced exposure to asbestos that there is nothing to worry about.

Problems related to asbestos can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years to show up. Therefore, just because you were exposed to asbestos two years ago and you have not suffered from it does not mean that you never will. If you have ever been exposed to asbestos, no matter how little, you are going to want to keep an eye out for the common signs and symptoms of Mesothelioma.

Asbestos is a mineral made up of tiny fibers that quickly and easily become airborne. Once these fibers are airborne they easily find their way into your lungs and the lungs of your loved ones. Some people think that it is only those that are directly exposing themselves to environments that have the asbestos that are at risk. However, he families of those putting themselves at risk are also in danger. This is because so many of these men and women are carrying the asbestos into their vehicles and into their homes. The entire family can be put at risk because one person exposed themselves to asbestos.

The major problem associated with asbestos is that of the development of cancer. Mesothelioma is the type of cancer associated with asbestos. It is a terrible cancer and one that claims many lives. Even if you are unsure as to whether or not you have been exposed to asbestos, you are going to want to keep an eye out on your health. Should you begin to notice a decline in your health or problems that are out of the ordinary for you, contact your health care provider immediately. If you have problems associated with asbestos, it is much better to start getting treatment now than later.

Another thing to consider is any possible compensation that you might be entitled to if you were exposed to the asbestos without your knowledge. Many people have found that they companies they worked for exposed them to the asbestos, even though they were aware it was present and the dangers that it carried. For your pain and suffering, your medical bills, your medications and for the heartache that your family will endure, it is important to make sure that you are going for any and all financial compensation you can get.

Being exposed to asbestos can have devastating consequences. But don't despair as our site has answers on Asbestos Tile. Here we also have great advice on Asbestos Test. Visit our site right now and find the information you're looking for.

History of Asbestos: From 300 BC To This Day

The written history of asbestos starts with Teofastro, a disciple of Aristotle, which described this material in his classic, "Of the stones," written about 300 B.C. Later, in the first century, the geographer Strabo localized the first deposit being mined to manufacture fireproof clothing on the island of Euboea. Dioscorides, a Greek physician contemporary of Strabo, mentions in his book "De Materia Medica" paintings and recyclable scarves that were given to the audience from the theater (this was because the asbestos scarves were easily cleaned and whitened with fire so it could bereuse in another function).

It also indicates other use of asbestos in Cyprus. The author names the name of the mineral asbestos. Plutarch tells us of theperennial flames that lit the Acropolis sprouting of lamps with asbestos wicks soaked in oil. Another contemporary writer of the above, Pliny the Elder in his "Natural History" was the one who gave the name asbestinon, which means inextinguishable or fireproof and mentions its use as a shroud for the incineration of corpses.

After the long period in the field of medieval alchemy and magic in the late thirteenth century and after a visit to a Chinese mine, Marco Polo returned asbestos to the scientific domain classifying the material as a rock. In the sixteenth century, Georgious Agricola in his "Treatise on Mineralogy" he included a detailed description of the different varieties of asbestos and its deposits.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the whole world saw a significant increase in scientific interest in the asbestos (Publications of the Royal Society in 1660, Frank E. Brückmann in 1727, Martin F. Ledermüller and Torben Bergman). Economic uses, recreational and even fraud are greatly expanded and in 1820 Giovanni Aldini designed asbestos suits for firefighters, which is considered the first commercial exploitation.

In 1828, part the first U.S. patent on the use of asbestos as insulation of steam engines. By 1860 the use of asbestos reaches it's a maximum as it get their products directly to be a vital element of fire safety in buildings, mixed with tar roofing, fireproof panels in theaters, and so on.

The century ends using asbestos in safes, in lubricating bearings, linings of boilers, and insulation of electrical cables and filtered juices. The twentieth century opened employment in the construction of the asbestos-cement mixtures (first panel invented by Austrian Ludwig Hatschez) and saw an extraordinary diversity of uses of asbestos (tiles, wall and ceiling panels, moldings, boats with plates asbestos and asbestos mixtures of plastics buttons, telephones and switchboards, vinyl tiles, asbestos automobiles brake pads, etc.).

It was famous the immense Asbestos Man shown in the "World Expo 1939 New York" that marked a milestone in the recognition of the usefulness of these minerals. The Second World War meant a significant increase in consumption of asbestos in military equipment (fireproof suits, parachute flares, engines, ships and torpedoes and scrubs) and subsequent reconstruction led the last big boost in trade and use (asbestos linings sprayed on the steel structures of skyscrapers, fireproof mailbags, purification of fruit juices, wine and sugar, sutures in surgery, toothpaste, artificial snow, etc.). In 1973 the U.S. consumption of asbestos peaked in history with 1 million tons annually.

Fortunately after that the use of asbestos has been declined. Largely due to medical advances and the discovery and prevention of mesothelioma disease (caused by breathing in asbestos fibers) through multiple organizations worldwide and asbestos and mesothelioma laws in different countries.

What is happening in Europe today? Well, while spending billions of euros in former asbestos removal, is allowing the importation and marketing of a new asbestos, called chrysotile (manufactured in Canada by the corporation Lab Chrysotile), or white asbestos, which is hidden in flasks, seals and other articles of daily use, in addition to continue to be used in the great industry lagging, but remains equally or more dangerous than asbestos.

The consumer health is threatened. In fact there is a lobby, an international plot the asbestos, which is responsible for bringing this material to be back on the market.

In Europe 70 million tons of chrysotile white asbestos from Canada, is introduced and legally distributed from the port of Hamburg by Dow Chemical, a company with factories and offices around the world, including Spain (Madrid, Navarre, Tarragona).

Lung Cancer From Asbestos: Important Facts to Know and How to Cope With the Problem

What are asbestos? Asbestos are mineral fibers that can be separated into thin, durable threads. These fibers are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals and do not conduct electricity. These minerals have been used widely in many industries. Chemically, asbestos are silicate compound of silicon and oxygen atoms in their molecular structure. The building and construction industries use asbestos for strengthening cement and plastics as well as for insulation, roofing, fireproofing, and sound absorption. The shipbuilding industries insulate boilers, steam pipes, and hot water pipes with these minerals. For their vehicle brake shoes and clutch pads, the automotive industry makes use of these fibers. Asbestos materials are also used in ceiling and floor tiles paints, coatings, adhesives, plastics and many others.

In recent years, due to widespread public concern about the health hazards of asbestos, domestic consumption had significantly dropped. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, studies show that constant exposure to asbestos caused an increase in asbestosis syndrome, mesothelioma, gastrointestinal, colorectal cancers and other diseases. Early stage asbestos lung cancer is hard to detect because of lack of apparent symptoms. It usually begins in the bronchial lining or the bronchioles, lung air sacs and trachea. The cancer develops slowly but can spread and invade other parts of the body.

Like any other type of lung cancer, the diagnostic tests include physical exams, x-rays, ct scans, imaging tests, PET scan and biopsies. During the diagnostic procedures, you should provide the medical team with vital and relevant information on the extent of asbestos exposure. Factors such as how long has been the exposure, estimated volume of exposure, source, size, shape and chemical make- up of asbestos fibers, whether you are a smoker or non-smoker and current lung problem are important things your doctors should be aware of. With regards its chemical make-up, studies have suggested that if the exposure is with the amphibole asbestos rather than the chrysotile, the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma lung cancer is greater because of the tendency of the amphibole fibers to lodge in the lungs for a long time.

Asbestosis is a disease in which asbestos fibers can cause scarring, inflammation of tissues and growth of non-malignant tumors in the lungs. They are benign and do not spread to the other organs. On the other hand, with mesothelioma, the growth of tumors that occurs in the serious thin membrane linings are malignant and they grow fast and spread to the other organs. When it occurs in the lungs, it is called pleural mesothelioma. It is a rare type of lung cancer. You can detect it by x-rays and confirm by biopsy test. Traditional treatments recommended by a medical team depending on individual evaluation include radiation therapy, surgery and chemotherapy.

Prognosticating mesothelioma reveal serious mortality rates. Factors which affect prognosis are area of cancer, stage, histology, patient's general health, age and response to treatment. Survival rate for patients with high level of white cell counts, presence of SV40 virus and certain biochemical markers from date of diagnosis is only a few months. The median life expectancy rate is about a year.

There are still many work environments and trades in which people are constantly exposed to asbestos. You may belong to any of these groups. Some of them are operational engineers, steamfitters, sheet metal workers, pipe fitters, plumbers, metal lathers, merchant marine, firefighters, shipyard workers, industrial plant workers, plumbers, construction workers, asbestos plant workers, boilers, longshoremen, railroad workers, industrial painters, workers in glass factory, schools, power plants, cement plants, military, hotels, telephone companies, oil refinery, loading docks, hospitals, chemical plants, heating and air-conditioning, boiler or engine rooms, etc.

If you happen to believe having a prolonged exposure to asbestos and are experiencing abnormalities, it is to your best interest to undergo a comprehensive physical exam. You should have a complete x-ray of the front, back, side, and oblique views. Other tests are pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan, etc. Request your doctors to explain to you what the tests reveal. It you are diagnosed with a lung cancer from asbestos, have the courage to face it frontally and disclose your condition to your loved ones. Ask for their support and prayers. Seek a second opinion. Lastly, pray for supernatural healing!

What Exactly Is Mesothelioma?

With the media getting their hands on more and more Mesothelioma cases, you would think that there would be a much greater. The thing is though, there are still thousands, if not millions, of people that are unaware of just how dangerous asbestos is.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is generally brought on by someone's exposure to asbestos. There are many people who are aware that working in environments, such as the mines and construction sites, will potentially expose them to asbestos. However, there have been many studies done that show that even those who are at home washing the clothes of the workers can end up with Mesothelioma.

There currently are no studies that are able to link Mesothelioma and smoking. The two simply do not go hand in hand as smoking and lung cancer do. Because of this, it is extremely important to make sure that you are being extra cautious of what you are breathing in. Just because your employer has you working somewhere does not mean that it is actually all that safe.

One thing that you are going to want to do is to make sure that you are learning all about the signs and symptoms of Mesothelioma. Since many of the signs of this disease do not appear until 10, 20 or even 50 years later, not everyone thinks to attribute their symptoms to the asbestos that they might have been exposed to so many years ago. For many people just learning of their Mesothelioma diagnosis, they were facing exposure to asbestos before anyone really knew much about it. They simply did not know what they were putting their body through.

Some of the symptoms to watch out for include shortness of breath, anemia, fatigue, pains in the wall of your chest and fluid that surrounds the lung. If you are suffering from a lot of wheezing, coughing or hoarseness and you are coughing up blood, it is time to seek out some advice from a medical professional. Of course, these are not the only symptoms. You might notice problems with your bowel functions, a mass in your abdomen and abdominal pain. For those that are dealing with an advanced stage of this terrible disease, you might find yourself dealing with blood clots, jaundice, pleural effusion, and weight loss.

If you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos and are worried that you may indeed have Mesothelioma, then you are going to want to seek out the attention of your health care provider as quickly as possible. The sooner this disease is caught, the better off you will be. There are options for treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. However, these are not all of the treatment options that may be available. Depending on the circumstances, Immunotherapy, multimodality therapy and epidemiology may be an option.

Now that you know a little more about Mesothelioma, you are going to want to make sure that you are paying better attention to your surroundings. This also means that you are not going to want to waste any time should you feel that you are in danger of this disease. Seek treatment and explore your options.

Mesothelioma Cancer: A Brief Introduction

The inhalation of asbestos causes lung and pleural cancer, as it has been demonstrated in animal experiments and epidemiological studies.

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of mesothelial cells, and affects the pleura and peritoneum in the 80% and 20% of the cases respectively. It usually occurs in people who have been exposed to asbestos in their workplace at least 15 years before the diagnosis, although sometimes the disease has been developed in people with very little to none exposures. In fact, the relationship between malignant mesothelioma and asbestos exposure was first described in 1960 by Wagner and colleagues in South African crocidolite miners.

The incidence of mesothelioma is known in countries where there is a national registry of this disease. Thus, the figure ranges between 14.2 and 2.5 cases per million in men and women, respectively, in the United States, 66 and 7 per million in Australia. In Spain for example there is no record of such occupational diseases. In a study conducted in Catalonia between 1983 and 1990, there was an attributable mortality rate of malignant mesothelioma per 100,000 cases of 0.83 and 0.47 in men and women respectively. In patients living in Barcelona and Cadiz with malignant mesothelioma, 62% of cases could be related to occupational exposure to asbestos, while the remaining 38% could be due to domestic or environmental exposures. The fact that mesothelioma can occur as a result of environmental exposure to asbestos is known, as described in populations living near asbestos mines in areas where the houses were painted with paint containing tremolite or in regions with high amount of the silicate in the soil.

The fiber appears to be associated with this tumor are amphiboles, whereas chrysotile, despite being the most commonly inhaled fibers, seems to be of danger. In Spain, the published series of malignant mesothelioma are concentrated in large cities, since, logically, is where there is a greater industrial exposure to asbestos. Patients usually present with a persistent pleural effusion and a computed tomography is used to reveal pleural lesions that may lead to a correct diagnosis of mesothelioma. This, however, requires pleural biopsy using thoracoscopy that has a yield above 90%.

Malignant mesothelioma invariably progresses to death of patients with a median survival of 7 months. With current evidence, neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy nor surgery have shown any improvement in the prognosis of these patients. Nowadays new treatments are being tested, as the introduction of intrapleural cytokines, photosensitization mesothelioma cell or gene therapy, with no conclusive results to date. The involvement of patients diagnosed in Spain in research studies of new therapies require cooperation between centers to study a sufficient number of patients.

Lung Cancer Clinical Trials: Research Studies to Bring Better and Safer Treatments

Many lung cancer clinical trials are sponsored by government agencies, private pharmaceutical organizations and health care institutes worldwide. In USA, the specific agencies and institutes involved in clinical trial sponsorship are the Department of Defense (DOD), National Institute of Health (NIH), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Today, some organizations are devoted to recruiting volunteer participants to these experimental studies. With enough info guide and explanation, patients are now more aware, knowledgeable and willing to participate in clinical trials.

These clinical trials are being researched to develop new treatments for Lung Cancer. The medical studies give access to cutting-edge treatments at no cost to the participants. There are more than 200 clinical trials being conducted including a Cancer, Three Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Stage I Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and A Randomized Trial of Adjuvant Chemotherapy With or Without Bevacizumab for Patient's with Completely Resected Stage IB (>4 cm) - IIIA Non Small Lung Cancer.

Among the various revolutionary clinical trials being held, let us highlight the collaborative advanced stage tissue lung cancer (Castle) study at the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute at San Carlos, California. The objective is to conduct research and laboratory tests on cancer tissue and blood samples by cancer victims. After collection, these samples and clinical information will be stored at the ALCMI Biorepository and Data Repository.

Around 250 advanced stage lung cancer participants from the United States and some from Europe are targeted. They are those in Stage M1A and M1B Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and all stages of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). If you are qualified and accepted, you will be asked to provide your medical profile, tumor tissue and blood samples.

As a preliminary entry requirement, your study physician will submit your tissue to a testing laboratory. Once the test reports come in, the results are indicated in your health file records as a guide for your doctor to plan your care and treatment. When there are changes in your treatment, new blood samples and latest medical information will be requested from you and there will be communication between you and your doctor every three months for an update on your health status. Whatever research reports collected about you will not be imputed in your research records.

The other featured clinical trial is the Radiation Therapy in treating patients with extensive small cell lung cancer being held at Sparta, New Jersey. The primary objective of this research is to make a comparative 1-year overall median survival rate between patients with extensive stage small cell lung cancer who are treated with prophylactic cranial irradiation and those who are treated with platinum based chemotherapy but without a consolidative extracranial radiation therapy. Its secondary goals are to compare adverse effects of the treatments in the patients, evaluate patterns of failure, compare the time to first failure and evaluate the percentage of radiotherapy dosage.

To be eligible, you must be diagnosed within the past 6 months of extensive stage SCLC and must have 1-3 extracranial metastatic lesions. Another criterion is you must have completed 4-6 courses of platinum-based-chemotherapy within the past 8 weeks and have partial or complete response to chemotherapy. You must also have no progression and no limited stage SCLC even if the illness has progressed and no brain or CNS metastases.

Their criteria for other characteristics for females are not pregnant or nursing, negative pregnancy test and must use contraceptives during fertility stage. Participant must have no severe, active co-morbidity such as acute bacterial or fungal infection requiring lV antibiotics and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation or other respiratory illness requiring hospitalization. You must also pass the required zubrod performance, ANC, platelets, hemoglobin, Serum ALT and AST, Serum Bilirubin and Serum Creatinine.

After your participation in these lung cancer clinical trials study is completed, you will be provided with appropriate follow-up care and assistance. To start with, you need to pass the prerequisite entry and once accepted, you will be a part of history in the making in advancing medical research for Lung Cancer for better and safer treatments in the future!

First Therapeutic Vaccine for Advanced Lung Cancer Registered in the World

Between 1980 and 2008, the mortality rate from lung cancer in women has doubled. Each year it is seen a growth of 1.7%, while among men the rate is being reduced by 2%. Today, 28.6% of women aged 18 to 64 years and is estimated that 7.6 million people died just 2008 due to lung cancer, a number that it is expected to increased to eleven million in 2030.

It is quite possible that two of the biggest concerns of health-related the citizens express in any country in the world are AIDS and cancer. Although there are other diseases that have less "press" and charge a huge amount of victims every year, especially in tropical regions, the truth is that getting a vaccine effective against cancer or AIDS are among the main objectives of laboratories around the world.

Fortunately, the battle against lung cancer has won a new step: it is a therapeutic vaccine rather than preventive, developed by recombinant technology advanced lung cancer, CimaVax-EGF, that was created in Cuba by scientists at the Molecular Immunology Center Havana.

This Cuban drug was prepared after 15 years of research and is currently being administered in 65 health centers in Cuba and have taken steps necessary to register in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and several other nations.

According to Cuban experts, the drug can not prevent disease but to control advanced cancer to generate antibodies against proteins that trigger the uncontrolled cell proliferation processes.

It consists of a therapeutic tool that is part of the field of immunotherapy, in which it is intended that the patient's immune system triggers an effective response to control the growth of tumors.

The vaccine is composed of epidermal growth factor protein and P-64 K of the membrane, obtained by recombinant means. The vaccine was successfully applied to more than 1000 patients in Cuba, where his health record was held in June 2008.

The result is that the vaccine extends survival time of patients, but does not prevent or cure lung cancer.
Specialists described the vaccine as "very promising" that soon others will come into being tested in China and will open doors in Asia. Is also expected next clinical trial in countries like Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Britain.

According to Gonzalez (the proyect leader) they are still workings with the principle of this vaccine with the intent to use in developing therapies against other tumors such as prostate, uterus and breast cancer.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer - What to Look For

Symptoms of Lung Cancer are dependent upon the size and area of the tumor in the lungs. Some of the symptoms of lung cancer a person may experience are:

· Zero Symptoms - meaning some people do not experience any symptoms of lung cancer (none) and the only time or way this cancer is found is when an x-ray is made of their chest for a regular examination. A CAT Scan will reveal lung cancer also.

· Symptoms of Lung Cancer - Symptoms related to this specific cancer and signs it is growing and spreading through the delicate tissues of the lungs hindering breathing, causing coughing, shortness of breath, a wheezing in the chest, pain in the chest, blood coughed up. The symptoms of lung cancer if it has reached the nerves could be shoulder pain which feels like it goes down the arm on the outside or the hoarseness from paralyzed vocal cords. The cancer symptoms if cancer has spread to your esophagus can be difficulty swallowing. Pneumonia is another symptom from the obstructed airway and collapse of part of the lung.

· Symptoms of Lung Cancer spreading (to other organs) - This cancer can spread to other areas, and organs of the body. Such as your bones and this symptom is severe pain where the cancer is spreading. Signs that this cancer that has spread to the brain will give symptoms such as blurred vision, headaches, seizures, or even stroke symptoms.

· Symptoms of Paraneoplastic Lung Cancer - or paraneoplastic syndromes accompany this specific cancers frequently and are remote indirect effects of an indirect cancer invasion of the body. The symptoms are new bone forming in such places as your fingertips causing pain, highly elevated blood calcium levels, blood clots, and even low blood sodium levels.

My grandfather died from this cancer and showed some of these very symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the above described symptoms of this cancer, make an appointment to see your physician as soon as possible.

It is recommended to quickly contact your doctor if you experience any of these specific symptoms:
A chronic cough you just cannot shake that only gets worse, no matter what you try.Coughing up blood.Bronchitis or respiratory infections that keep coming back and you cannot get over.ANY chest pain.Weight loss for no reasonContinual fatigueAll breathing difficulties, if you start wheezing, or a shortness of breath that never leaves.

Some of the above symptoms of this cancer are ones we may casually dismiss, especially during cold/flu season, or even allergy season. Allergies can really hit us hard, I know they do me and they even make you wheeze if you have asthma. As they do with my mother.

However, if you are like my buddy I have known for 30+ years, ever since junior high and have a cough all year-round. If you also smoke like he does and has for years, and wheeze like I noticed him do over the phone the other night while we were just catching up. (Honestly, I am worried about him and his health and hope he quits smoking soon.)

Then, if you are like my buddy, please go see your doctor. What you could be experiencing are the symptoms of lung cancer and they should not be ignored any longer. Please, get help.

We have looked at the Symptoms of Lung Cancer, and yes lung cancer can develop from Asbestos Poisoning. If you or a family member experience such symptoms, go to talk to a doctor.

Radon Gas a Silent Killer!

Did you know that according to the U.S Surgeon General radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer related deaths each year in the United States?

What is Radon Gas? Radon is a natural occurring gas that comes from the breakdown of Uranium in the ground. It is colorless and odorless and the only way to know if it is in your home is to test for it. Radon can be found all over the country. Your home may be highly infected with Radon and your neighbor may have low levels.

There are many ways to test your home for radon. There are test kits you can buy at your local hardware that range between fifty and a hundred dollars. There are also professionals who will come and test your home for you these test usually cost between a hundred and twenty five and two hundred dollars. Having a professional test is much more accurate provided you hired someone who is certified to test for Radon Gas, they have gone thru training on the proper way to set up the testing equipment and have more reliable testing equipment than what is offered at your local hardware.

Radon is measured in Pico Currie Liters. The Environmental Protection Agency says that if your home is 4 Pico Currie Liters or higher you should have the Radon remediated. I have heard the analogy that for every Pico Currie Liter of Radon in your home it is the equivalent of smoking a pack and a half of cigarettes a day.

If your home is found to have high levels of Radon Gas don't panic, It can be remediated. A good remediation system costs between twelve hundred and twenty five hundred dollars. This type of system should be installed by a professional. I would also recommend that you have a separate company do your testing and remediation so there is no conflict of interest.

Radon Gas is a silent killer that doesn't have to be. With proper testing and remediation; you can rid your family's risks from the effects of this deadly gas. I would say it's a good idea to have a professional Radon test performed anytime you buy a new home along with your home inspection, and every two years afterwards.

Remember the only way to know if your home is at risk for Radon Gas is to test for it. This is one of those risks that unfortunately most people don't know about until it is too late. In the last few years the government has tried to educate people on the harmful effects of Radon Gas, However most people still don't know about it or if they do don't take it serious until it has affected them or someone they know. I would recommend that it should be made mandatory that when someone purchases a home that they are given a pamphlet on Radon Gas and have to sign something just like they do with lead based paint. The only way we can protect our family and friends is to educate them about Radon Gas, and I urge all of you to at least mention Radon gas to someone. Who knows you may just save a life.

Thank you for reading this article about the harmful affects of Radon Gas to learn more visit our resource page at http://www.michiganmoldtesting.com/. Also if you live in Southeast Michigan you can schedule a professional Radon Test from Trademark Home Inspection. Matt Cottenham

Effects of Lung Cancer - What Are They?

Effects of Lung Cancer have been devastating families for years, for both the one who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and their loved ones. This destructive cancer effects the families by the pain it causes them from watching the once healthy vivacious person deteriorate. The Effects of Lung Cancer on the sick is pain, and loss of health and sometimes life. This deadly disease has grown to claim more lives than the other cancers combined. However, for being a cancer with such a high death claim, it is slow in the beginning stages. Then the effects of this cancer will grow rapidly as the disease will spread and invade other parts of the body. If one will just let this disease go without any treatment, this horrible cancer will gradually infect the bones and yes the brain. Effects of lung cancer at the beginning stages are a feeling of heaviness in the chest. Also a cough that sticks around regardless of what you take to try to rid yourself of it. This cancer has been known to both spread like wild fire in the body, or just be very slow-growing and spreading. However doctors have been treating it successfully, but it must be caught early enough. Some people will not experience much if any effects of lung cancer at the start. While other people diagnosed with this type of cancer will suffer horribly from the lung cancer effects on their body and health. Let us not forget the effects of the treatments for this specific cancer which, yes are effective in stopping this disease, at the same time have side effects that can make the patient miserable, so say the least.

Effects of Lung Cancer List
Shortness of breathPersistent coughHeavy feeling in chestChest pain or acheUnexplained pain in other areas (possibly from cancer spreading)Blood coughed up (this is known as an early warning sign and the lung cancer may yet be curable.)Wheezing during breathingHoarsenessChronic pneumonia and/or bronchial infectionsExtreme FatigueWeight loss

The majority of all of these cancer cases diagnosed come from tobacco smoke, both first and second-hand. This includes both cigarette and cigar smoking. My personal advice is if you smoke, STOP. If my father would have stopped smoking years ago when they first found the spot on his lungs, he would still be alive today. Do this to extend your life for yourself and mostly for your family. Sure it will be tough, but so what, the best things in life are worked for and are tough to get to. The payoff in the end is worth that small price of a little discomfort. Your chances are a lot better, and in fact you have a chance if you quit. Well, you know what lies ahead of you if you don't. You will be able to live.

It is hard for us to watch family members suffer through the Effects of Lung Cancer and watch them slowly fade away. I know, I have been in those very shoes. Asbestos Poisoning can also lead to lung cancer.

Best Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

Finding the Best Solutions for this Tricky Cancer

When you are dealing with Mesothelioma, you don't have a lot of different options for treatment in most cases. The way that this condition presents, combined with its known latency period that can last between 4 and 5 decades, makes it very difficult to treat effectively. Patients can experience many types of this condition, and while 75% of cases present in the lungs, it can also be diagnosed in the abdomen or heart. Finding the right treatment is all about understanding the type of Mesothelioma that is present, its stage of development, and where it is located in the body.

Avoid Misdiagnosis

This is a very uncommon cancer in the grand scheme of things. Therefore, it often goes undiagnosed for a long time, or it is misdiagnosed because the odds of actually having it are so rare. Once a suspected diagnosis of Mesothelioma is present, the doctor will order tests to figure out exactly what is going on. Make sure that if you have had exposure to asbestos in your lifetime and you present with common symptoms, you note this so that you have a better chance of getting the right diagnosis for more effective treatment options.

The Prognosis

Mesothelioma doesn't have a particularly good outlook for patients who are suffering from the condition. There are plenty of elements that affect your survival rate and initial prognosis, including things like:

-The size and stage of the cancer

-Whether surgery is an option

-The type of Mesothelioma that is diagnosed

-The age and health of the patient

-Initial diagnosis vs. a secondary case after treatment and remission

Treatment Solutions

There are many different treatment options for this condition, depending on various factors like those mentioned previously. In most cases, radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery are the standard treatment options. Of course, this cancer usually requires an aggressive combination treatment for the best possible results.

Surgery:

There are four types of surgery that are used to treat Mesothelioma. An excision will remove the cancer and some of the healthy tissue to make sure that the cancer is completely gone. This is effective, but rarely an option because the cancer has spread too far by the time of diagnosis. Pluerectomy and decortication, which is a procedure that removes the lining of the lungs and other areas that are affected, is another option. In some cases, doctors will remove an entire lung, as well as parts of the diaphragm and the lining of the pericardium, which protects the heart. The final procedure involves using chemicals and drugs to create scarring in the lung lining. That stops the buildup of fluid in this disease.

Radiation Therapy:

Like most cancers, Mesothelioma can be treated using radiation in many cases. This helps kill the cancer cells, but can cause a lot of side effects that are less than desirable. Because of the advanced stage that is usually present at diagnosis, most people require aggressive radiation therapy combined with medications or surgery to get the best treatment possible.

Medications:

Chemotherapy, which is administered orally or by injection, is effective at stopping the cells from growing and spreading. This treatment can be done with pills, IV treatments, or intramuscular injections, which will help ensure that the cells are killed or stopped in the right area. In many cases, combination chemotherapy is employed because multiple drugs have a better chance of killing the disease than a single drug alone

Choosing the Right Treatment

It starts by talking to your doctor and developing a treatment plan. The type of Mesothelioma that you have, combined with other factors, will determine the right solution for your best prognosis.

Malignant Mesothelioma - A Dreaded Disease

Malignant mesothelioma is cancer that starts in the cells that line most organs of the body, especially the chest, belly, and heart. The lining formed by these cells is called mesothelium. The mesothelium forms a protective sac that surrounds internal organs of the body. It consists of two layers: one layer of cells surrounding the organ and another forming a sac around it. These cells secrete a fluid that allows organs to move effortlessly and harmlessly within the space defined by the mesothelium.

Thus, moving organs like the heart and the lungs can function normally only with a functioning mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a disease in which the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and multiply uncontrollably, invading the surrounding tissues affecting the very organs they are supposed to protect. In most cases of mesothelioma, the lungs are the organs that are affected. The mesothelium of the lungs is known as the pleura. Pleural mesothelioma is the most commonly diagnosed form of the disease.

Risk factors and risk groups

Mesothelioma is associated with asbestos. Around 70-80% of all cases of mesothelioma have a history of exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a group of minerals that has been widely used in industrial products such as cement, brake linings, flooring's, textiles and insulation. The first cases of mesothelioma occurred in the 1900s in Britain where workers at asbestos factories began experiencing a high level of lung disease. The disease was then referred to as asbestosis. It was only much later, in 1959, that the link between asbestos and lung cancer was made.

Mesothelioma can also arise as a result of secondary exposure to asbestos. A chance of developing cancer in families and other persons in contact with asbestos workers is great due to exposure to dust from the clothing and hair of the worker. People living in old buildings (prior to banning of asbestos in construction materials) are also at risk. The occupations that are most associated with mesothelioma include: construction industry workers, electricians, plumbers, shipyard workers, textile workers etc.

Incidence of mesothelioma

Most countries now specify the level of asbestos that can be safely present in the working environment of a person. Since the risk of asbestos-related disease increases due to heavy and longer exposure to asbestos, proper working environment led to a reduction in the cases of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is now a relatively rare disease; only 2000 cases arise every year in the United States.

Living with the disease

Like many other cancers, there is very little one can do where the diagnosis has not been made in the early stages of the disease. Unfortunately, most cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in its late stages. There is no cure for the disease. In some cases, tumors may be removed by surgery, in the hope that it has not already spread to other parts of the body. Surgery may aim to remove the tumor or the entire lung. Treatments by radiation and chemotherapy are mostly palliative (i.e. aiming to reduce the severity of symptoms rather than treating the disease).

New Developments in Mesothelioma Research and Treatments

Cancer research and development is an ongoing process. In the field of mesothelioma treatment, researchers are focusing on improving traditional treatments as well as developing new techniques to ease the pain of patients. New chemotherapy agents and combination's are now giving new hope to mesothelioma patients and are increasing the survival rate amongst them. Several recent advances have improved diagnosis and treatment of this incurable disease. Hoping for a cure in the near future is therefore not something surreal.

CT Scans

Computer tomography scans are not only a diagnostic tool in mesothelioma treatment. CT Scans now enable the surgical team to accurately determine the position of tumors in the anatomy of the patient. This enables cytoreduction to be more effective. Adequate cytoreduction is an essential prerequisite to improving the survival chances of the patient. The greater the number of tumor cells that are removed, the less is the chances that the cancer grows and propagates.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy is one of the latest mesothelioma treatments being researched. PDT makes use of a photosensitizer. This is a drug that produces active oxygen when exposed to a certain wavelength of light. Active oxygen destroys all nearby cells. When the patient is treated with the photosensitizer (e.g. with porfimer sodium), the drug invades the whole body. However, by the very nature of the molecule, it remains attached to cancer cells for a longer period. Hence, after a period of 24-72 hours, when the agent has been removed from the normal cells, the tumor is exposed to light (usually a laser transmitted to the tissue by a fiber optic cable carried by an endoscope). Active oxygen destroys the tumor cells directly with minimal damage to normal cells. PDT also helps to shrink tumors indirectly by destroying the blood vessels that supply tumors and activating the immune system to fight the tumor.

The advantage of PDT is that it can be used repetitively with much less side effects than other treatments. The main drawback is that the light usually cannot reach tumor cells that are more than 1 cm deep. Hence, PDT is most effective in skin cancers and cancers found in the lining of internal organs or cavities. Fortunately, mesothelioma falls in this category.

Angiogenesis Inhibitors

Angiogenesis refers to the development of new blood vessels. Blood vessels are a critical factor in the growth of tumors. All malignant tumors develop their own vascular system that carries nutrients from the bloodstream to the tumor, fuelling its growth. Controlling the development of these vascular systems has been an important strategy in the fight against mesothelioma cancer. Angiogenesis inhibitors are drugs that block angiogenesis. This cuts off the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tumor whose growth immediately halts.

The advantage of angiogenesis inhibitors is that they are not as toxic as most other chemotherapy drugs. They can thus be given continuously to the patient and are thus more effective in fighting the cancer. An example of an anti-angiogenesis drug under clinical trial for mesothelioma is bevacizumab (Avastin).

Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon, but no longer rare, cancer that is difficult to diagnose and poorly responsive to therapy. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases.

A layer of specialized cells called mesothelial cells lines the chest cavity, abdominal cavity, and the cavity around the heart. These cells also cover the outer surface of most internal organs. The tissue formed by these cells is called mesothelium.

The mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. For example, this fluid makes it easier for the lungs to move inside the chest during breathing. The mesothelium of the chest is called the pleura and the mesothelium of the abdomen is known as the peritoneum. The mesothelium of the pericardial cavity (the "sac-like" space around the heart) is called the pericardium.

Tumors of the mesothelium can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). A malignant tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma. Because most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is often simply called mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma was recognized as a tumor of the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium in the late 1700's. However it was not until much later, in 1960, that this particular type of tumor was described in more detail and even more importantly, its association with asbestos exposure was recognized. The first report linking mesothelioma to asbestos exposure was written by J.C.Wagner, and described 32 cases of workers in the "Asbestos Hills" in South Africa. Since than the relationship between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure has been confirmed in studies around the world.

The incidence of mesothelioma in the United States remains very low, with 14 cases occurring per million people per year. Despite these numbers the noticed threefold increase in mesothelioma in males between 1970 and 1984, is directly associated with environmental and occupational exposure to asbestos, mostly in areas of asbestos product plants and shipbuilding facilities.

Although the disease is much more commonly seen in 60-year old men, it has been described in women and early childhood as well. The cause of the disease is not so well understood in these latter two groups, but there is some evidence of possible asbestos exposure for some of these cases as well.

Mesothelioma is one of the deadliest diseases known to man; the average life span of an inflicted person from the time of diagnosis until death is less than 24 months. It's a disease that strikes approximately 3,000 United States citizens each and every year; hard working people who have labored for a lifetime to provide for their families, doing the work that keeps this country running and a great place to live. They worked in factories, at shipyards, in mines, for the US military, as engineers, as pipefitters, as steel workers, as auto mechanics, and in so many other professions. They came home to their loved ones exhausted and covered in dirt and dust; tired, but content that they had a job and were providing for their family. Content that they were putting food on the table and a house over their loved one's heads. Content that they were working to make a better life for their families in this generation and the next...

But what they didn't know was that while they were working so hard, they were not only slowly killing themselves, but those that they were working so hard to help; their family, their loved ones.

What is the mesothelium?

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs) to glide easily against adjacent structures.

The mesothelium has different names, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. The mesothelial tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

What Is My Diagnosis?
There are three types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung (pleura), peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and pericardial mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining surrounding the heart (pericardium). Sub-types (or cell types) of mesothelioma are epithelioid (the most common, and considered the most amenable to treatment), sarcomatous (a much more aggressive form), and biphasic or mixed (a combination of both of the other cell types).

The structural appearance of cells under the microscope determine the cell or sub-type of mesothelioma. Epithelioid is the least aggressive; sarcomatoid, the most aggressive. The biphasic or mixed cell type shows structural elements of both of the other two.

Mesothelioma Survival Rate - Bad!

Mesothelioma Survival Rate is not high and on average people diagnosed live from 4 to 11 months after. This survival rate is just harsh reality and devastating to the patients and their families. Sad is this fact as well that there are around 3,000 new diagnoses a year. However, new experimental treatments are being worked on to increase that number. See, this is good news because you get to spend that much more time with your loved ones. The American Cancer Society has been quoted to say that 40% of the patients now diagnosed with mesothelioma not live longer than a year and an average 10% live longer than 5 years.

The estimating or predicting, or attempt to do so, for anyone is difficult and there are some factors to take into consideration. Plus, the fact that no two patients are alike and what is true for one is not for another. The first factor that affects the individual's mesothelioma survival rate is the latency period.

The latency period is a big factor in the mesothelioma survival rate. This period is the amount of time from the time of exposure to asbestos and the first symptoms of mesothelioma. The time span between the two, or latency period, is anywhere from 20 - 50 years. This is a very long time for any disease to establish and when doctors finally do diagnose the health issues of the patient as mesothelioma, unfortunately it has spread to an advanced stage.

My question I have, that was not answered by any of my research is:

Why not go to your doctor before the symptoms begin, and you are still in the latency period. Talk to them, inform the doctor you worked with asbestos and what can they do to stop mesothelioma from taking your life?

Another factor in the mesotheliom survival rate of the asbestos exposed is the stage it is in when they are diagnosed.

Stage 1 and 2 have a better rate of survival because the disease has been caught early.

Stage 3 and 4 have a lower survival rate due to the advanced cancer growth and fewer treatment options available. Treating a cancer that has spread to other organs is an almost impossible battle to win inside the human body.

So, to recap, we have learned here that our mesothelioma survival rate goes up with the earlier diagnosing of it. I say, go to your doctor if you work with, or have worked with or around asbestos products. Learn the symptoms, educate yourself, this will help you in the end.

Other factors in the survival rate are:

· Age of the patient when diagnosed

· Does the patient smoke

· Health of the patient at diagnosis

· Size of tumor and if it has spread or can be removed

Treatments can improve Mesothelioma Survival Rates among some patients. Some of these treatments being rather aggressive such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation help some people. Remember though this varies from person to person. For some these therapies help, for others it does not.

Some survivors have had success with alternative therapies which aim to strengthen the immune system and boost their well-being. Some of these therapies are acupuncture, massage, yoga, nutritional supplements.

Mesothelioma Survival Rates are not good and that is a sad fact. However we can increase the time we have with out loved ones who have this dreaded disease and more time is always a good thing.

I am sorry that I need to reveal to you the very low Mesothelioma Survival Rate, if it is any consolation, I have been in your shoes of having a loved one diagnosed with this disease.
It makes me hate the material of Asbestos and the destruction Asbestos Poisoning does to the body and our loved ones. I know the hate for a fiber is not healthy and does me no good and I will not hold onto it.

Cures for Lung Cancer - The Important Things That You Should Know

"I'm sorry to inform you that you have lung cancer and you only have 12 months to live."

If the doctor said this you, what should be the first thing you do? That's right. You would be running around, researching the internet, asking for prayers, looking everywhere to find a cure for lung cancer. Why? Because we have been told that there is no cure for this one and that it is basically a death sentence.

This article will not try to convince you that there are cures for lung cancer. We KNOW that there are; it's just a matter of you opening up your mind to a brand new perspective; a whole new worldview that maybe something is amiss here.

With all the technology we have in this day and with all the resources at our disposal to research cures for lung cancer, with billions of dollars spent on experiments and lab tests; can we at least be optimistic and think that maybe they did find a cure?

Now you ask me, if they did find the perfect cure, why would they keep it from the public?

The answer is really surprising: THE LOVE OF MONEY! The root of all evil!

Billions of dollars are spent by cancer patients each year on treatments and medication. If the medical industry announced that a miracle has happened and that they found cure for lung cancer, what would happen then? They would lose those billions of dollars.

Drug companies and private medical institutions know this so they conspire to keep this fact away from the public. Instead of giving the cure, which would then stop the patient from coming back to spend more, they would treat the disease as slowly as possible so they keep coming back.

To be honest with ourselves, if we found out that there really are cures for lung cancer, would you still believe the way of the "accepted" and traditional methods like chemotherapy or surgery or high-energy radiation? I think most assuredly not. But this doesn't take away the fact that there are cures for lung cancer. And they are found in alternative medicine.

There are lots of alternative medicine that can be found not only through internet research but even contemporary physicians have begun to accept the healing powers of methods like Controlled Amino Acid Therapy (CAAT), Photodynamic Therapy or PDT, and many others.

If you do research and then dig deeper, you will find dozens of testimonies from people who have found a cure using the alternative methods. Just be under the impression that cancer is a symptom and not the disease itself. If you change the lifestyle, you can find cures for lung cancer; although the medical institutions would strongly disagree with you.

For effective cures for lung cancer and for more prevention and treatment read the next page carefully. If one of your loveones or friends that you care about is dealing with any type of cancer and are desperate for complete healing, go take a look at this site One minute cure.

Mesothelioma - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which develops from the protective lining that covers the internal organs of the body such as the lungs, the abdominal cavity and the heart. Environmental or occupational exposure to asbestos is mainly believed to be the cause for this condition. The commonest presentation of malignant mesothelioma is in the pleura which covers the lungs. Common symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, collection of fluid in the pleura, and general symptoms such as weight loss. Diagnosis of this condition is usually done with the help of chest x-ray, CT scan of the chest and biopsy of the pleura. Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma appear nearly 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. The cancer can spread to other parts of the body and produce different local symptoms. The modern management of this condition involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, or a combination of these treatment modalities; however, the overall results are quite poor even with combined treatment. Survival after a confirmed diagnosis of this condition is an average of 1 to 2 years. Exposure to asbestos can have medico-legal implications and this condition is usually associated with lawsuits, seeking compensation for the condition.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for mesothelioma is aimed at treating the tumour, preventing its spread to other parts of the body, and improving the overall survival rate. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can also be combined with modern management such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Because of the aggressive nature of mesothelioma, Ayurvedic herbal treatment needs to be instituted at the earliest possible. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are required to be given in high doses and for prolonged periods in order to control this condition. Since the commonest presentations of this disease is in the pleura covering the lungs, herbal medicines which have a specific affinity for the lungs and the pleura are used as the mainstay of treatment in the management of this condition. In addition, herbal medicines which have a specific action on the blood tissue are also used in the management of mesothelioma. Medicines are also used to prevent the spread of this condition through the blood and lymphatic circulation. The medicines which are most useful in the management of this condition have an anti-inflammatory effect as well as an anti-cancer effect. The use of such medicines therefore helps in controlling inflammation, infection, as well as actually killing and removing the cancer cells.

In addition to the above treatment, Ayurvedic herbal immunomodulatory agents are also used in high doses in order to boost the immune system of the affected individual so as to help fight against the cancer and bring about a complete remission of the condition at the earliest. A strong immune system also helps to maintain the strength of the affected in individual and brings on a feeling of vigor and vitality. Depending upon the presentation of the disease, symptomatic treatment is also given for symptoms such as chest infection, fever, hemoptysis, pneumothorax, and the formation of pus in the pleural fluid. Herbal medicines also need to be given to flush the dead cancer cells, toxins, and debris generated in the treatment either through the gastrointestinal system or through the kidneys. Medicines useful in the treatment of Mesothelioma include Kantakari (Solanum indicum), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis ), Kanchnar Guggulu, and Mahamanjishthadi Qadha.

Most individuals affected with mesothelioma require aggressive Ayurvedic herbal treatment for about 12 to 15 months in order to comprehensively control the condition and significantly improve the survival rate. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant contribution to play in the management and treatment of mesothelioma.

Dealing With Mesothelioma

Internal organs of human body are protected by a covering best known as mesothelium sac. In actuality there are two layers of this covering, one is the immediate covering of the organs and the other covers the organs like a sac. This layer gets different names according to the organ it covers.

Mesothelioma derives its name from this membrane cover. This is a highly dangerous cancer which generally attacks the lungs and chest of the patient. During inhalation a person takes in large amounts of Asbestos which is in the form of dust particles. These particles attack the lungs in the very first instance. Mesothelium membrane which covers the lungs is known as pleura. Mesothelioma generally has its roots in pleura. Cancerous cells found in mesothelium multiply rapidly.

Mesothelioma is mostly found in men. Men, who have been exposed to Asbestos for a number of years, become easy prey to the disease. Risk of contracting the disease grows with age. People who have been working in places like underground coal mines, gold and diamond mines, mills, shipyards and manufacturing units where high quantities of Asbestos is used in manufacturing, are more prone to this type of cancer.

It is always a shock to know that someone known to you has contracted mesothelioma. Once the truth is known to you, it is advisable to contact the nearest mesothelioma law firm in your area. It is necessary to have a lawyer because treatment for mesothelioma is expensive. A good law firm can help you out of your critical financial situation by getting you compensation from the place of work from where the disease was contracted.

Treatment for mesothelioma depends upon the age of the patient, place where the cancerous cells have been found, and level of disease. A doctor may advice the members of the family to have their relative undergo chemotherapy, surgery or radio therapy. At times if the problem is found in much worsened state, all the treatments might be required in unison. Some people prefer to go for herbal medicines, vitamins, peptides, minerals and amino acids etc.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration allows certain amount of ASBESTOS to be used at workplaces. The amount is below danger mark. Companies which do not adhere to these norms can be penalized. Patients, Patients' families and their Lawyers can file a case against these companies because these companies have caused contraction of this disease. Companies have paid heavy compensation for their neglect.

Learn About Asbestos Lung Cancer

Asbestos Lung Cancer is scientifically known as bronchial carcinoma or mesothelioma. It is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, heart, or abdomen. I found out also that a cancer known as thoracic carcinoma or adenocarcinoma. All these cancers are linked directly to exposure to asbestos.

There are no immediate signs of asbestos lung cancer or mesothelioma developing when you are exposed. What I mean is, on the same day, week, or even month of your heavy exposure to asbestos will lung cancer give you signs of its growing. No, this cancer will take anywhere from 20 to 40 years from exposure to asbestos related cancer developing.

Smoking greatly increases the asbestos lung cancer rate over people who do not smoke. Now, don't get me wrong both will cause cancer, both will cause lung cancer independently. However it can be said that the heavier a smoker you are the greater the asbestos lung cancer chance you have if also exposed to asbestos for a long time.

The best advice? Quit smoking. If you need help quitting, get it.

Another factor to developing mesothelioma in later years after exposure to asbestos is the length of time and the amount of asbestos the person is exposed. They teach us that everyone is exposed to asbestos in minute amounts every day. However, a worker in an intensely asbestos dust situation or using products daily with asbestos contained in them is the one with the greater risk of developing lung cancer.

Recently it has been reported widely that lung cancer is now the world's leading cause of cancer deaths. That is a staggering stat, and I have lost loved ones to this and to asbestos lung cancer - mesothelioma. Men of course have the higher risk than women. My mind tells me this is because more men work in industries using asbestos containing products.

Also at risk are workers employed in the manufacturing, milling, and mining industries. Individuals as I mentioned earlier who work with asbestos products over long periods. U.S. military veterans, shipyard workers, and specifically anyone who served in the military branch the Navy during World War 2 have a high risk of developing asbestos lung cancer. This WW 2 vets specifically because of the high exposure rate in the building and running of battleships.

These exposed individuals are also at risk of asbestosis, which is a scarring of their lungs from asbestos. This is a chronic condition that restricts breathing from the scarring, my dad got this and his breathing was greatly limited. I seen a once physically active man who played sports and was strong be reduced to unable to walk to the next room without oxygen.

I believe it is hard for me to think of asbestos as being something actually mined from the earth. I usually associate things from the earth as natural and healthy, like garden foods, water, fish, and so on. This changes my perspective on how to look at certain things now. I guess tobacco is a natural plant, with a pretty flower and until man either chews or smokes it is isn't deadly to us. Asbestos is the same I guess, not deadly until man started using it.

Asbestos Health problems take years, even decades to begin to manifest. To learn more on this topic and more, simple go to Asbestos Poisoning we post regular articles for the education of people.
